I've listened to SoE about 7 or 8 times. I like it...it's a bit ponderous for my tastes, unlike that reviewer I'm more interested in the notes themselves than the space between them. But I love his voice, I wish there was more of it actually.
It's been a week or so since the last listen so I'll have another crack later.
7-8 times is a laudable commitment. Well done. It is of course, absolutely ponderous. But I'm glad you like it, even if you don't love it. I think the thing about it for me (apart from just loving the music) is the fact that it is absolutely timeless, and sort of exists in its own place. I was thinking about it last night actually and worked out that I was 17 when I first heard it (during a summer in Berlin). And I bought a copy when I got back home. Which means I've been listening to it (pretty regularly) for 25 years. And familiarity hasn't dulled it at all.
I assumed the quiteness was whole people were fulfilling their three line whips.
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying local boys Drenge too. Certainly on a BARTs longlist.
I like it. Not sure I can allow the steeple/people line though.
ReplyDeleteHave listened to JaMC once. Want to do one more...

ReplyDeleteEnjoy listen number nine...
I'd forgotten that you had a Berlin period.
DeleteHeh, beat me to it by about 5 seconds and Laura is now asking why I keep grinning.
